Fall has been my favorite season for as long as I can remember. There is something about this time of year that inspires me to slow down and appreciate life for the beauty it holds. For the past week, I have been able to walk around my college campus and enjoy the refreshing Fall weather. The trees sway with hues of golds and reds, and the crisp breeze energizes me as I walk to class. For this week’s post I thought I would share my Fall Favorites with you as we all enjoy this time of year.
Taking Walks Under the Colorful Leaves
This week is Mid-Semester week at Grinnell College, and nothing is better than being able to take a stroll under the color-changing leaves as a break from the stress of Midterm exams. Walking underneath the swaying leaves with sunlight dancing in a kaleidoscope of patterns allows me to regain perspective when I need it most. The challenges of my day are momentarily muted by the refreshing scenery, and I am able to reflect on what matters most. On a few of my strolls I stopped to take pictures of my surroundings, and immerse myself completely in the moment.
Though we all experience daily challenges, it is refreshing to be able to walk in the crisp weather and reflect on what we need in our lives.
Pumpkin Patches and Apple Orchards
Some of my fondest childhood memories are those of days spent in pumpkin patches and apple orchards. The mystery of corn mazes, the excitement of tractor rides, and the search for the perfect pumpkin made for unforgettable memories. Similarly, the crisp taste of fresh-off-the-tree apples and the tangy-sweet flavor of homemade apple cider are seasonal treats.
Pumpkin Spice Lattes
I love coffee, especially during the colder months, and as I write this I can say that I had never tried a “Pumpkin Spice Latte” until today (October 13th). I had never given into the hype, but as I perused the menu at the local coffee shop I thought that it was well past time that I give this famous drink a try. I did not know what to expect, but I must say that I was quite impressed. The pumpkin spice flavor is unique to this time of year, and perfectly complements the crisp air of a typical Fall day.
Warm apple pie with vanilla bean ice cream is my favorite Fall dessert. It combines the Fall flavors of apple, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and is the ultimate comfort food on a chilly night. Do you have a favorite apple pie recipe? Let me know in the comments!
Candy Corn is a traditional Fall treat, and one that I can enjoy only in limited quantities. While I love the taste for the first few pieces, I find that they are much like pistachios in that they are quite filling and lose their flavor after eating too many in one sitting. But they are a Fall staple, and a must-have for the month of October.
Reading Under the Swaying Leaves
Fall is the perfect season for reading outside. The weather is neither hot nor cold, and the sound of swaying leaves is the perfect backdrop for a restful afternoon. My favorite Fall book series is the Penderwick series by Jeanne Birdsall. This has been my go-to series for relaxed Fall afternoons for ten years. There are currently four books, the most recent being The Penderwicks In Spring.
